There is something special about photographing a business that already has an incredible backdrop. For a recent commercial photography project, I spent the day aboard the Pensacola Bay City Ferry creating images that showcase the ferry as more than transportation.
The Pensacola Bay City Ferry connects Downtown Pensacola, Pensacola Beach, and Fort Pickens. The catamaran-style vessels offer comfortable indoor seating, covered outdoor areas, restrooms, and incredible views of Pensacola Bay. While many people know the ferry as a fun way to explore Pensacola, the team also wants people to see the possibilities beyond a typical ferry ride. Their private charters create a unique setting for celebrations, gatherings, and corporate events.
That idea became the focus of this commercial shoot.
I wanted to capture the experience of gathering on the water. Instead of simply photographing an empty boat, I focused on the moments that help potential customers imagine themselves onboard. The goal was to create images that feel inviting, colorful, and full of possibility.
Imagine hosting a rehearsal dinner while cruising across Pensacola Bay. The ferry offers private event options for weddings and rehearsals, along with customizable spaces for ceremonies and receptions.
Birthday celebrations can also take the party out onto the water. The ferry promotes private events for milestone birthdays, anniversaries, Sweet 16 celebrations, and other special occasions.
The ferry also gives companies a way to step outside the traditional conference room. Private charters can accommodate employee outings, team-building events, client entertainment, holiday parties, workshops, and seminars.
Commercial photography for Pensacola businesses requires more than taking pretty pictures. Every image needs to communicate something about the business. It needs to show potential customers what they can experience and help them picture themselves there.
I wanted the images to feel bright, fun, welcoming, and full of energy. I photographed the spaces, details, views, and little moments that make an event aboard the ferry feel different from a traditional venue.
Yes, I was absolutely sweating by the end of the day.
But that comes with photographing in Florida.
And when your office for the day sits on Pensacola Bay, I really can’t complain too much.
