When people ask me if I’m a newborn photographer, I suggest taking a look into lifestyle newborn photography. This is what I love to do and I typically have to explain the difference between a lifestyle newborn session, and a newborn session. I love photographing newborns and seeing new mothers in their element, right at home. When one of my best friends, Jill delivered her baby in Mississippi, I wanted to get there as soon as I could. I was dying to see their new baby- Crew Matthew. But when she mentioned doing some photos, I was all in.
This session is a perfect example of what lifestyle looks like. Of course, you have new outfits, and maybe props, you’d love to display for your new baby! But, babies most often are just perfect on their own. All we need is a white sheet, window lighting in a neutral colored room, and we’ll be good to go. Any outfits or props you want to use, we can change in between baby sleeping, napping, or feeding. This makes the session feel relaxed. We’re not on studio time so you don’t need to rush out of the house. If there are older siblings present, we can have them play in their rooms until they’re ready to join. And let me tell you, was Campbell SO ready to have her moment? Look at that gorgeous red hair! I loved that she felt included and special when so often toddlers are still adjusting to the shared attention with a newborn baby.
I love visiting Jill. She and I go way back and she’s one of the few people I’ve kept in touch with from college. The funniest part is, we were in Kappa Delta together at The University of Southern Mississippi, but we didn’t grow extremely close until we both found ourselves working on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. I could blog about our memories for days. Flash foward and I’m living in Florida as a Photographer. She’s in Mississippi with two beautiful children, her awesome husband, Casey and she’s a marketing guru! So, she knows her way around a camera and makes the session all more intimidating. I wanted to put only her the best forward for Jill and she showed up prepared with the most beautiful outfits. We stopped in an adorable boutique in Madison called Kinder Boutique and I even snagged a few items for my client closet! There’s another blog I need to write..
The images in her home went so well and it was awesome to not have any time contstraints. But then, we decided to do some outdoor portraits. Y’all.. I’m used to the heat and humidity. I live in Florida. But the day we chose I swear there was not a hint of breeze to be felt. I was in light clothing and I was drenched in sweat. We called it a short session and got back indoors as soon as we could.
So, if you’re interested in getting newborn photos done, I highly suggest checking out lifestyle newborn photography. There are beautiful works of art to be created with both types of sessions and I’m certain you’ll find one for you. If you’re looking for more of an Anne Geddes type of session, you’re welcome to still shoot me an e-mail! I’ve got a list of photographers I highly recommend in our area who have perfected that craft.
